When you see seasoned actor Kim Coates in a velour dinner jacket in a suspenseful film, it's hard to avoid the conclusion that "Well, he's playing the Devil." Regardless of where his career has led him—"Waterworld," "Black Hawk Down," or "Sons of Anarchy"—his appearance in his later years may be ominous to the point of being diabolical. He is, however, a mystery in the thriller "Neon Lights Moviesjoy," which is so obscure that not even its title makes any sense.

As he prepares to meet his long-distance family at a distant 1920s home, he is whispering in Clay's ear. Is this man an especially demanding "I call, you answer" investor or "the staff" of the mansion? A ghost within Clay's head? a devil? Then we realize he has a reflection, that people appear to see him even though they don't appear to know any more about him than we do. We continue to be confused.

Clay, who is shy and cracking up, tries to convince Benny, the bully brother, Benny's wife, James, another of the lowlife brothers, and Blair, his niece, that he only wanted to reconnect and show them a good time now that he is doing well. While his company prepares for an IPO, he is shell-shocked, "off the grid," and there are reports that he could "lose my company." And this man in the dinner jacket starts saying things like, "You need to deal with your problems like a man," and "Into the shadows, Clay must go."

We can speculate as to what that might involve after seeing Clay scared and bloodied in the opening shot of the movie. These frequently unpleasant visitors could be considered his "personal demons." With characters that don't always resemble one another and Blair identifying the people we think to be her parents by their first names, the plot makes it unclear what connections exist between them.

People start to go through some things as Clay is baited and tormented, and Clay, who is occasionally seen receiving physical and psychotherapy, keeps telling himself, "I'm not crazy, I'm not crazy," as seen in the movie. The star vehicle, which is essentially a showcase for him acting whimpering shyness, mental insanity, and meltdowns, was written by the young bit player, Abraham, who was born in Bangladesh and reared in Canada. He also helped raise the money for it.

Everything is fine, or at least passable. But as a screenwriter, he struggles with organization and a convoluted plot where every effort is made to hide the twists from the audience. The group dynamic he creates is enticing, but the answers to "What's REALLY going on?" are much less intriguing.

Abraham plays this character's tics, persecution mentality, and cowering well enough. He has a sort of Bangladeshi nebbish Michael Stuhlbarg vibe. But in a movie about Clay, what goes on in his thoughts, or what might actually be happening to him, Clay isn't even close to being the most interesting character. Every time Coates is on screen, he serves as a reminder of this. Even in the weakest movies, he is a compelling presence. Not necessarily one of those is "Neon Lights Lookmovie." But it's not far.
